Ronald Susilo Takes Home the Crown
SINGAPORE, 22 March 2014 – Youth badminton talents were treated to a display of exceptional shuttling skills and hard-hitting action delivered by top-notch players in the Pilot Pen National Age Group (Singles) Championships 2014 Open categories. The championship finals, which attracted a record number of 665 entries, culminated in an exhilarating finish at the Singapore Badminton Hall today.
Before a capacity crowd of 450 badminton fans, Ronald Susilo beat Bernard Ong 21-16 and 21-17 in the Men’s Singles (Open). The latter put up a spirited fight, but buckled under the prowess of Susilo’s well-placed strokes and composure, proof of his maturity and international competition experience.
Over at the Women’s Singles (Open), Grace Chua Hui Zhen emerged victorious over Tan Ai Ninna.
For the Boys’ and Girls’ Under 17, Ryan Ng Zin Rei and Crystal Wong Jia Ying triumphed over Neo Wei Ren and Anoki Harian respectively. (Please refer to the annex for the full results of the tournament.)
Winners of the Pilot Pen Age Group (Singles) Championship walked away with over S$10,000 in cash and in-kind prizes.
The Pilot Pen National Age Group (Singles) Championship 2014 is organised by Singapore Badminton Association, sponsored by Pilot Pen Singapore and supported by Singapore Sports Council. It provides the platform for young badminton players to develop their skill and confidence, and has attracted the best youth talents in Singapore.
Mr Benjamin Teh, General Manager of Pilot Pen Singapore, said, “We are thrilled to expose our young talents to the exceptional skills displayed in the Open categories. We need to provide our youths with role models to look up to. Pilot Pen has gone a long way to support the local badminton scene since 1994 and we are committed to continue nurturing young talents who aspire to represent Singapore in the international arena one day.”
